Russian Peoples Friendship University is located in Moscow, Russia. It was formed in 1960 by the Soviet government. The main aim of its establishment was to assist developing nations. However, it accommodates many students from developed countries as well. The schools name changed to Patrice Lumumba University. Patrice Lumumba was a Congolese Independence leader.
The first Rector of the university was Professor Sergey V. Ruiantsev. Russian Language studies were introduced at the Faculty of History and Philology, Faculty of Engineering, Medical Faculty, Agricultural Faculty, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics. In 1965 the first 288 students who were from 47 countries graduated. By 1975 graduates had increased to more than 5,600 from 89 foreign countries.
On 5th February 1960, the People’s Friendship University was established in Russia. It was formed by the USSR Government. In 1961 the university’s name was changed. In order to symbolize the fight for Africans for their independence, it was named after Patrice Lumumba. By doing this it ensured students could pursue their educational dreams and aspirations without being judged politically. However, on 5th February 1992, the name was again changed but maintained its principles of friendship and support. This decision was made by the Government of Russia.

The university provides accommodation facilities with more than 14 hostels available. The accommodation facilities can host up to 9000 students. The rooms are on a sharing basis.
